BAIC Arcfox Beta S3 launched; 10,000 pre-orders in two hours, battery rental from ¥59,800
Fast uptake for a budget EV
BAIC Arcfox (北汽极狐) this week formally launched the Arcfox Beta S3 (极狐贝塔 S3), and the marque says the model added more than 10,000 new large deposits within two hours of going on sale. The company is offering a conventional charging version from ¥79,800 and a battery-swap variant where the battery rental (or subscription) option starts at ¥59,800. It has been reported that presales overall have already topped 30,000 orders, with swap-version orders exceeding 23,000.
Pricing, battery business model and buyer profile
The split pricing — a lower headline price for the charge-only car and a separate battery rental for the swap model — is now common in China. Why pay up front for a battery that can be swapped or leased? The approach lowers the upfront cost but creates an ongoing service revenue stream and binds customers into a swapping or subscription network. It has been reported that more than half of the presale buyers are under 30, and roughly one-third of orders come from trade-ins or replacements.
What this means for China's EV market
Arcfox is BAIC Group’s electric brand targeting younger, value-conscious buyers in a crowded domestic market dominated by players such as BYD and budget rivals like Wuling. Rapid early orders underscore how aggressive pricing and flexible battery strategies can mobilize demand in China’s mass market. Geopolitically, China continues to strengthen its domestic EV and battery ecosystems as global supply chains face scrutiny and trade frictions — a backdrop that makes local swapping networks and battery leasing more attractive to both manufacturers and policy makers. Still, strong presales do not guarantee deliveries on schedule; it has been reported that timelines for customer deliveries were not specified at the launch.
