BYD (比亚迪) opens world’s highest-altitude “Everest Station”; reportedly more than 5,356 fast-charging sites nationwide
The new "Everest Station"
BYD (比亚迪) has officially put into operation a flash-charging station in the Everest Town (珠峰小镇) area — reportedly the highest-altitude fast-charging site in the world. The Shigatse (日喀则) Everest Town charging point sits in Dingri County (定日县), Zhaxi Zong Town (扎西宗镇), near the Mount Everest National Nature Reserve. Why build at 5,000+ metres? Part practicality, part proof of concept: extreme altitude and cold pose real challenges to battery performance and charging logistics, and the station doubles as a technical and PR milestone for BYD's push into remote markets.
Charging tech and national rollout
It has been reported that the Everest site supports BYD’s second-generation blade battery and its “flash charging” technology, claiming charging windows of roughly 5 minutes to a usable charge and about 9 minutes to a full charge, with charging time increasing by only about three minutes in -30°C conditions. As of April 16 it has been reported that BYD has completed 5,356 flash-charging stations covering 311 cities across China, and the company previously announced plans to scale to 20,000 flash-charging stations nationwide by the end of 2026.
Why it matters
For Western readers less familiar with China’s EV landscape: BYD is one of China’s dominant electric-vehicle makers and its blade battery design has become a domestic standard for safety and cost. Expanding a dense, fast-charging network reduces range anxiety and locks in customer convenience — especially important as global EV supply chains face scrutiny and export controls that could limit overseas expansion. Domestically, the Everest Station signals Beijing-friendly industrial push into border regions and supports tourism and local mobility while showcasing a narrative of technological self-reliance.
