Leapmotor (零跑) launches D19 flagship SUV — prices start at RMB 219,800

Launch and positioning

Leapmotor (零跑) has put its new D19 large luxury SUV on sale, with seven trim levels priced from RMB 219,800 to RMB 269,800. The D19 is the first model in the company’s new D series and is pitched as a flagship, high‑tech alternative to premium Chinese rivals and an attempt to step up the brand’s market positioning. Can Leapmotor move from challenger to premium contender? That is the commercial question behind the glossy specs.

Design, cabin and amenities

It has been reported that the D19 uses Leapmotor’s “Universal Realm” front‑end design and is offered in both extended‑range and pure‑electric variants with largely unified styling; the pure‑electric model reportedly adds a 176‑litre front trunk and an active grille. The car measures 5,252 mm long with a 3,110 mm wheelbase and comes in 6‑ or 7‑seat layouts. Inside, Leapmotor equips the D19 with a large wraparound cockpit, three color schemes, extensive soft‑touch materials and a long list of luxury touches — from a 60‑inch AR‑HUD and a 17.3‑inch center screen to a 23‑speaker Leap Sound system (peak 2,304 W), an onboard “forest oxygen” system (up to 8 L/min reportedly), multi‑zone fragrances and ambient lighting.

Powertrains, charging and chassis

The D19 is offered as both an extended‑range electric vehicle (EREV) and a pure battery EV. The reported EREV uses a 1.5T range extender plus dual motors (total 300 kW) with two battery choices (63.7 kWh CLTC 400 km / 80.3 kWh CLTC 500 km pure‑electric figures) and long combined ranges thanks to the generator; Leapmotor says its 800V platform allows 30–80% charging in about 15 minutes. The pure‑electric versions run on a 1,000V architecture — dual‑motor models claim up to 410 kW and 620–720 km CLTC, while a three‑motor top model claims 540 kW and 0–100 km/h in 3.94 seconds. Chassis hardware includes multi‑link suspension, CDC dampers, and (except on base trims) dual‑chamber air suspension with active ride functions the company calls “magic carpet.”

Autonomy, safety and geopolitical context

Reportedly the D19’s domain computing is driven by Qualcomm Snapdragon “dual 8797” chips with 1,280 TOPS and a sensor suite of 28 devices, including a roof‑mounted lidar; the vehicle’s VLA‑architecture driver assistance supports parking‑to‑parking, highway and urban piloted features. Active safety claims include AEB/AES capabilities across broad speed bands and a structure with more than 75% high‑strength steel plus multi‑layer battery protection. These advanced sensors and U.S.‑sourced chips underline a wider reality: Chinese automakers are racing to pack premium tech into EVs even as semiconductor supply, export controls and scrutiny of lidar and AI‑enabled systems remain a geopolitical factor for companies that want to sell abroad. Will the D19’s tech stack and pricing be enough to sway buyers at the top end of China’s crowded EV market? Leapmotor has made a bold play — now the market will judge.
