It has been reported that BYD (比亚迪) pushed about 200 over‑the‑air (OTA) updates in 2025 for its Ocean and Dynasty lineups — far more than legacy global automakers. Why does that matter? Because cars are increasingly “software‑defined”: features, user experience and even some performance characteristics can be changed after purchase. Rapid OTA cadence is now a competitive lever in China’s fast‑moving EV market.
Frequency, players and contrast with foreign rivals
According to Chinese research firm Ways, other local brands such as AITO (问界) and Leapmotor (零跑) also maintained high update rates. By comparison, it has been reported that Tesla issued 16 updates in China last year, Toyota 8 and Volkswagen 5. Chinese OTA activity has focused on vehicle control, design tweaks, driver assistance and system functions — areas that directly affect perceived product freshness and safety.
How they pull it off — and why geopolitics matters
Automakers attribute the cadence to end‑to‑end control of software stacks and key hardware. A BYD representative said that owning semiconductor design, operating systems and execution hardware lets the company “implement updates faster and more precisely.” That technical self‑reliance takes on geopolitical significance amid US‑led export controls on advanced chips: firms that can localize critical components gain both a performance and a strategic edge.
Business model and lifecycle consequences
OTA can extend a vehicle’s commercial life like a smartphone’s software updates. It has been reported that most OTA patches in China remain free, so monetisation is nascent. XPeng (小鹏汽车) CEO He Xiaopeng has suggested advanced autonomy could enable subscription models; Tesla has already experimented with a subscription option for FSD in North America. For OEMs, the tradeoffs are stark: longer sales cycles and higher residuals versus fewer opportunities to recoup investment through frequent hardware replacements.
