Apple releases iOS / iPadOS 26.5 Developer Preview Beta 2 — subscription tweaks and Maps "Suggested Places"

Apple has pushed iOS and iPadOS 26.5 Developer Preview Beta 2 to testers, bringing subtle but consequential tweaks to subscriptions and new monetization signals inside Apple Maps. The update (internal builds 23F5054d / 23F5054h) arrives just ten days after the prior beta — a brisk cadence that underscores how Apple is iterating on developer-facing business controls and cross-platform features ahead of a wider rollout.

What’s in the build

The most concrete change for app makers is a new in-app purchase option: "monthly billing, 12-month commitment." This gives developers an intermediate pricing tool to balance user flexibility with longer-term retention. It could shift how subscription apps — from media to productivity — price annual commitments. It has been reported that when users open Maps for the first time in this beta they see a popup explaining that the app will surface paid recommendations via a "Suggested Places" slot, an explicit move toward in-map advertising or promoted listings. Apple has also reportedly re-enabled Rich Communication Services (RCS) end-to-end encryption between iPhone and Android users in this test build, though it remains unclear whether that capability will persist into the final release.

How testers can install

There are two internal build identifiers depending on installation method: 23F5054h for over-the-air (OTA) updates and 23F5054d for installations via IPSW. Public beta testers must sign up for the Apple Beta Software Program and enable Beta updates under Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates. Developers need an active Apple Developer Program account and can get the preview through Settings > General > Software Update. Beta 1 of 26.5 (23F5043k) was released on April 4, so this is a rapid follow-up for those tracking incremental changes.

Why it matters

Small UI prompts and new billing hooks can have outsized effects: promoted map listings change discovery dynamics for local businesses, and a 12-month commitment option could nudge churn rates and lifetime value calculations across markets — including China, where app-store monetization and regulatory scrutiny are closely watched by both developers and policymakers. Will users accept paid placements in a service they expect to be neutral? And can Apple maintain cross-platform RCS encryption amid complex carrier and regulatory environments? For now these are questions to watch as Apple finalizes 26.5.
