WeChat (微信) explains three subtle features you can "use by swiping"

What WeChat says the swipes do

It has been reported that WeChat (微信), the super‑app operated by Tencent (腾讯), has published guidance on three small gesture features that speed up content handling. According to IT之家, the official "WeChat Pai" (微信派) public account walked users through gestures that work across public articles (公众号文章), video channels (视频号) and mini‑programs (小程序).

Read halfway through an official account post? Left‑swipe toward the bottom‑right and you can star the current article. Watching a video channel or using a mini‑program while hailing a cab? The same left‑to‑bottom‑right swipe will mark that item. These shortcuts aim to make bookmarking and returning to content faster without opening menus.

Video speed control and a broader context

Beyond bookmarking, WeChat detailed a second swipe trick for video playback: long‑press the playing video and swipe left or right to change playback speed. Unlike fixed speed steps, the feature reportedly supports continuous, stepless adjustment ("无级变速"), so users can nudge speed precisely while keeping the same vertical‑swipe browsing behavior for videos.

Why should Western readers care? WeChat is not just a messaging app for many Chinese users; it combines social feeds, payments and lightweight apps into one platform used by over a billion people. Small UX tweaks can therefore have wide effects on browsing habits and attention. And in an environment where Chinese tech firms face intense domestic regulatory scrutiny and heightened geopolitical attention abroad, even minor interface changes are closely watched for their impact on user experience and data flows.
