Sony (索尼) raises China-region PS5 prices from ¥2,999 to ¥3,999 starting tomorrow
Price shock for China gamers
It has been reported that Sony (索尼) will raise China-region prices for its PlayStation 5 family, with the entry-level digital PS5 (825GB "slim" model) moving from ¥2,999 to ¥3,999 effective April 2. The increase applies to PS5 and PS5 Pro models sold as the official China-region (国行) units, representing roughly a one-third jump in the base price and a material hit to affordability for many buyers.
Part of a global repricing — but why now?
Sony says the change is part of a global price adjustment: the US list price reportedly rose by $100 for the PS5 and $200 for the PS5 Pro (roughly ¥690 and ¥1,381 at current exchange rates). “We fully understand the impact a price adjustment will have on our user base,” Sony said, adding that the move is a necessary step to continue delivering high-quality gaming experiences. Why the jump? Industry watchers point to a mix of rising component and logistics costs, currency swings, and broader inflationary pressure. It has been reported that geopolitical factors — including tighter export controls on advanced chips and ongoing trade frictions — are also squeezing device makers’ margins, though Sony has not tied the change to any single cause.
What this means for Chinese consumers
For mainland Chinese buyers considering a PS5, the window to buy at the previous price is short — retailers are expected to sell through existing stock at old prices until the change takes effect. For Sony, the increase risks slowing adoption in China’s price-sensitive console market, where the company has been rebuilding its install base since re-entering the mainland market. Gamers and resellers will be watching closely to see if Sony adjusts regional bundles, promotions, or localization strategies to blunt the impact.
