BYD (比亚迪) sold 300,222 vehicles in March, doubling month-on-month and becoming China's top-selling automaker

Sales surge and market context

BYD (比亚迪) reported March sales of 300,222 vehicles, roughly double February’s deliveries and enough to make it China’s best-selling automaker for the month, according to a company data release reported by IT Home (IT之家). The figure marks a 98.44% month‑on‑month rebound from February 2026 (190,190 units) but a 20.45% year‑on‑year decline from March 2025 (377,420 units). The strong month‑over‑month recovery highlights BYD’s volatile seasonal pattern but also its scale: can any rival match this kind of production swing?

Product mix, exports and infrastructure

BYD said passenger car sales were 295,693 units in March, split almost evenly between battery electric vehicles (BEVs) at 147,601 and plug‑in hybrids (PHEVs) at 148,092. Overseas passenger‑car and pickup exports reached 119,591 units, up about 65.2% year‑on‑year — a sign the company’s global push is accelerating. BYD also reported March battery installations of roughly 21.255 GWh and a 2026 year‑to‑date total of about 60.215 GWh. By brand, the company listed Dynasty/Ocean series (王朝 | 海洋系列) at 262,327 units, Fangchengbao (方程豹) 25,926, Denza/Tengshi (腾势) 7,133 and Yangwang (仰望) 307. It has been reported that BYD’s 5,000th “flash‑charging” station and the first batch of high‑speed flash stations entered service, with the network now covering 297 cities.

Implications for global EV competition

The numbers underline BYD’s rapid scale-up and its widening footprint overseas, where it increasingly competes with incumbent Western and Korean brands on price and production capacity. That expansion comes as Washington, Brussels and other capitals heighten scrutiny of Chinese technology and supply chains; trade policy, tariffs or regulatory probes could shape BYD’s next phase abroad. Can BYD sustain growth while navigating geopolitical headwinds and shifting consumer demand? For now, the Chinese champion is back on top at home — and growing louder on the world stage.
