Report: Mainland China version of Apple Intelligence not only withdraws pushed models, it also deletes models downloaded locally
What happened
Apple (苹果) briefly opened Apple Intelligence in mainland China in the early hours of March 31, then pulled the feature after regulators had not yet approved it. It has been reported that the China-specific build did more than retract centrally pushed model updates: reportedly, models already downloaded to users' phones were remotely removed from local storage. The claim, shared by blogger @数字尾巴 and picked up by IT之家, says the deletion was performed remotely — even for files that users had saved on-device.
Apple response
Apple told reporters the availability was caused by a software issue that briefly allowed Chinese devices to download and enable Apple Intelligence, and that the issue has been fixed; the company said the product’s official rollout in China will follow regulatory approval. The company also said it is “actively working” to bring Apple Intelligence to China, but declined to provide a timetable. The deletion claims remain unconfirmed by Apple beyond its statement about a software bug.
Why it matters
Why should Western readers care? China requires separate approvals and tighter operational conditions for AI services, and foreign firms face heightened regulatory scrutiny amid broader U.S.–China technology tensions and export controls. If models can be pushed and then pulled — even from local storage — that raises questions about user control, data sovereignty and how global AI features will be governed inside China. Reportedly remote deletion, if true, could alter how consumers and businesses view on-device AI in tightly regulated markets.
