Xiaomi (小米) launches beta of Surging OS 3 with self‑developed system input method supporting AI dialogue

What shipped

Xiaomi (小米) has rolled out a beta of Surging OS 3 (澎湃 OS 3) that, it has been reported, includes a newly self‑developed system‑level input method. Images shared by blogger @懒酱的日记本 reportedly show an early build with a large rounded‑corner keyboard design and the basic typing features already in place, though the blogger cautioned the build appears to be an early internal beta and needs polish in both function and aesthetics.

Features on display

The in‑house input method reportedly supports AI translation, AI dialogue (interactive chat from the keyboard), toolbar management and keyboard‑layout adjustments. It also offers a toggle for “advanced materials” — a frosted blur background effect for the keyboard — suggesting Xiaomi is treating the input method as both a productivity and visual layer of the OS. Separately, Xiaomi’s Surging OS account announced a new Password App (密码 App) that can auto‑capture and store passwords on first login, provide one‑tap autofill, allow manual additions and offer proactive reminders and manual updates after password changes; it reportedly also supports cross‑device synchronization.

Why it matters

System input methods are core to mobile UX and data flow — they can be a gateway for on‑device AI and tighter privacy controls, or a vector for platform lock‑in. Why build one in‑house? For Xiaomi, a native keyboard with AI features is a step toward deeper vertical integration of its software stack and richer on‑device AI experiences. It also fits a broader trend in China’s tech sector toward indigenous software development as companies brace for geopolitical headwinds and tighter controls on foreign hardware and services. Can Xiaomi turn a keyboard into a competitive advantage? That remains to be seen as the beta matures and wider testing begins.
