Wang Yunhe resigns as head of Huawei (华为) Noah's Ark Lab (诺亚方舟实验室) and Pangu (盘古大模型)

Resignation announced

It has been reported that Wang Yunhe, director of Huawei (华为) Noah's Ark Lab (诺亚方舟实验室) and the lead for the Pangu large model (盘古大模型), announced his resignation on his WeChat Moments, without disclosing his next steps. The post thanked colleagues and leaders for eight to nine years of collaboration and reflected on long hours and early-career internships. Reportedly, he did not provide a new employer or future role.

Career and role

Wang graduated in mathematics from Xidian University and earned a PhD from Peking University’s Intelligent Science Department in 2018, with research in deep learning, model compression, machine learning and computer vision. He interned at Noah's Ark Lab during his doctorate, joined Huawei full time in 2018, and rose through ranks from senior engineer to technical expert. He became head of the algorithm application division in late 2021 and in March 2025 succeeded Yao Jun (姚骏) as Noah's Ark Lab director, taking direct responsibility for the Pangu series.

Why it matters

Leadership turnover at one of China’s highest-profile AI labs matters beyond internal personnel moves. Pangu is a central element of Huawei's push into large language and multimodal models — a strategic emphasis as U.S. sanctions and export controls have constrained Huawei’s hardware supply chain and pushed Chinese firms to prioritize software and AI capabilities. Who will steer Pangu next? Observers will watch closely for any shifts in research priorities or partnerships.

Short-term implications

It has been reported that Huawei has not announced a successor. In the near term, the resignation raises questions about continuity for flagship projects and talent retention at a time when China’s AI sector is under intense domestic and international scrutiny. Stakeholders will be looking for an official statement from Huawei (华为) and any signals about the lab’s roadmap for Pangu and related AI initiatives.
