Gree’s Dong Mingzhu (董明珠) Rejects “Lying Flat” Narrative, Says Social Opinion Is Misleading
Leader: mismatch between rhetoric and reality
Gree Electric Appliances (格力电器) chair Dong Mingzhu (董明珠) dismissed the “lying flat” (躺平) trend among young people as a misleading social narrative, it has been reported. Speaking at a Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (香港科技大学) event, she defended her record and told students she had created roughly ¥200 billion in business value — and yet, reportedly, people still accuse her of moving too slowly. Who is really out of step: the young people opting out of rat‑race culture, or the commentators shaping the story?
What she said and where she said it
At the March 26 talk, Dong told students the “lying flat” label is a form of public misguidance, not an accurate reflection of youth behaviour, and urged graduates to stay in innovation hubs such as the Greater Bay Area. It has been reported that she challenged students to ask themselves “Can I do it?” rather than imitate others’ apparent withdrawal from competition. Dong has reiterated similar views in recent political season remarks, arguing that many who complain verbally still act constructively — “that is the sunny side,” she said, according to reports.
Broader context: labour sentiment meets corporate performance
Dong’s comments come amid sustained debate in China over youth employment, work‑life balance and social expectations. “Lying flat” has been both a social media phenomenon and a political talking point: Beijing has signalled support for youth employment and productivity while urging social stability. At the same time, Gree’s own results show pressure: its 2025 third‑quarter report recorded revenue of ¥39.855 billion, down 15.09% year‑on‑year, and net profit of ¥7.049 billion, down 9.92% — with nine‑month revenue and profit also down versus 2024. In that light, Dong framed success as steady improvement rather than instant pace, pushing back on critics who focus on speed rather than cumulative value. It has been reported that her remarks were carried by local outlets including IT之家 and 东方财经.
