WeChat (微信) tests “collapsible image sending” — three-plus photos can merge into a single display

What’s being tested

It has been reported that WeChat (微信) is staging a limited gray test of a new "collapsible image sending" feature that combines three or more photos into a single, collapsible preview. The report comes via a Xiaohongshu (小红书) user, @爱吃香菜饭, and was picked up by IT Home (IT之家). The behavior was observed on iOS version 8.0.69, where selecting three or more images or videos reportedly surfaces a "combine send" option.

How it works

Users who encounter the test reportedly see an aggregated preview that can be adjusted by swiping left or right. A button on the left of the preview labeled “expand” restores the traditional multi-image view; after expanding, a “collapse” control appears to revert to the combined display. Short and simple. But will users prefer a tidier thread or extra taps to view each shot?

Why it matters

WeChat, operated by Tencent (腾讯), frequently rolls out incremental UI experiments domestically before broader launches, especially for features that change core chat behavior. For Western readers, think of it as an attempt to reduce visual clutter in message threads — similar in spirit to album previews on other platforms — while keeping individual image access intact. It has been reported that the 8.0.69 formal iOS update released in February carried only a terse changelog ("fixed some known issues") yet included other tweaks such as lockable video-call screens and message playback controls.

Next steps

The feature remains a limited internal test for now and has not been officially announced by Tencent. Expect more public-facing updates if the company decides the interaction improves engagement or message readability. Reportedly, wider rollout will depend on user feedback from this staged experiment.
