Reports say ByteDance (字节跳动) has halted Doubao (豆包) AI glasses

Project paused, reportedly over lack of differentiation

It has been reported that ByteDance (字节跳动) internally decided in February to pause its Doubao (豆包) AI glasses project, and that the product line is no longer being treated as a strategic direction “in the visible cycle,” according to Z Finance and an ithome summary. Reportedly, the core internal judgement was that current AI glasses are “very difficult” to deliver meaningful differentiation versus existing wearables. That assessment reportedly prompted the suspension rather than a full cancellation.

Earlier supply-chain plans and partner reports

Earlier media scoops suggested a different trajectory. Kechuangban reported that Doubao’s large model group was working with Runxin Technology (润欣科技) and jewellery firm Lao Feng Xiang (老凤祥) on an AI glasses product priced around RMB 2,000 and aiming for a 2026 launch. Supply-chain reports from January said the first generation was being prepared for shipment with a planned run of roughly 100,000 units, to be distributed initially to core Doubao users rather than broad retail. It has been reported that a Doubao representative told Yicai that those launch rumours are inaccurate and that there is currently no firm sales plan.

What this means for China’s AI-hardware push

The pause highlights broader obstacles for Chinese internet giants seeking to move from AI models to consumer hardware. Competition from incumbents in wearables, an uncertain consumer case for AR-style glasses, and persistent supply-chain and chip access constraints — intensified by ongoing geopolitical and trade frictions — make hardware bets riskier. Will ByteDance rework the concept or retreat to software and services for now? For Western readers, the episode illustrates how technical ambition collides with harsh market and strategic realities in China’s fast-moving tech landscape.
