WeChat (微信) HarmonyOS app requires phones on HarmonyOS 6.0.0.130+ to use scan-to-login on watches
Lead: a small update, a big dependency
Want to log in to WeChat on your Huawei watch by scanning a QR code with your phone? There’s a catch. The WeChat (微信) HarmonyOS app has added support for scan-to-login on watch devices, but phones must be upgraded to HarmonyOS version 6.0.0.130 or later — and the phone-side WeChat needs to be at least 8.0.15.49 — before the feature becomes available.
Requirements and staged rollout
IT Home reported that WeChat’s HarmonyOS client received an 8.0.15.64 update on March 12 with a terse “fixed some known issues” note. It has been reported that Huawei (华为) terminal customer service told users the watch-login capability is being opened in batches: phones running HarmonyOS 5 and above will be supported in principle, but Huawei recommends updating to HarmonyOS 6.0.0.130+ and waiting after upgrading mobile WeChat to 8.0.15.49+. Once enabled for an account, users can scan the login QR code on the watch with their phone to sign in; if the app still shows “not supported” or “version too low,” the rollout likely hasn’t reached that user yet.
Ecosystem push and broader context
WeChat’s HarmonyOS client landed on Huawei’s AppGallery (应用市场) in January last year and reportedly has been installed over 40.08 million times, with core features such as messaging, payments, official accounts, mini-programs and video channels supported. The incremental watch-login feature highlights Huawei’s ongoing push to strengthen HarmonyOS device interoperability — a strategic focus that has become more pronounced amid U.S. sanctions and global chip and software supply tensions, which have encouraged Huawei to accelerate its own software ecosystem.
