Insta360 (影石) Luna Ultra edges closer to launch — a Leica-backed pocket gimbal for prosumers

Preorders and the pitch

Insta360 (影石) has quietly opened the door to pre-sales for its high-end pocket gimbal camera, the Luna Ultra, and the specs read like a checklist for serious mobile creators. Reportedly some German retailers are already taking reservations with a €50 deposit that will be deducted from the final price, and expected shipment windows are said to be around a month — though final timing awaits the official release. A compact camera with Leica optics and 1‑inch sensors? Sounds tempting. Can a pocket device really replace larger rigs for creators on the move?

Specs and positioning

The Luna Ultra is being positioned directly against DJI (大疆)’s Osmo Pocket 4P, but with higher-end imaging hardware. It reportedly uses a Leica (徕卡) co‑developed dual‑camera system with a 1‑inch main sensor, supports 8K capture and 4K at up to 120fps, and offers 10‑bit i‑Log plus Leica color profiles for heavy post work. Built‑in three‑axis gimbal stabilization pairs with three onboard AI chips for subject tracking and automatic framing, making single‑operator shooting easier and more reliable.

Price, availability and market context

It has been reported that Insta360 CEO Liu Jingkang (刘靖康) confirmed U.S. pricing at $780 for the standalone unit and about $960 for the kit — figures he emphasized would not be mirrored exactly in China. Pricing and distribution will matter: with supply‑chain pressures, export rules and U.S.–China tech tensions still shaping component costs and market access, how and where this camera ships could be as important as its specs.

From the pre‑sale behaviour and the hardware list, the Luna Ultra is clearly a contender in the premium pocket camera space. If the official launch matches what’s been leaked, expect it to be one of this year’s most discussed portable creators’ tools — provided consumers are willing to pay a premium for Leica glass and pro video chops.
