Taishan Sports debuts a “fitness” bus stop — a glimpse of China’s push for smarter, healthier streets

What was unveiled

At the sixth China International Consumer Products Expo (消博会) in the exhibition centre’s welcome hall, organisers rolled out a new IP called “消博新品秀” with five themed zones — country, provincial/city, tech consumption, health consumption and fashion — and more than 40 new-product launch events involving nearly 100 domestic and foreign brands. It has been reported that state broadcaster CCTV (央视新闻) filmed a striking exhibit from Taishan Sports Industry Group Co., Ltd. (泰山体育产业集团有限公司): a bus stop outfitted with fitness equipment, from a stationary bike to pull-up bars, plus an AI-enabled chess table.

Product and pitch

Taishan Sports — which reportedly presented the global debut of its “urban health smart service center” (城市健康智慧服务中心) — says the product bundles three core functions: fitness, public convenience and safety, and fuses smart services with a mass‑fitness concept. It has been reported that the company’s chief engineer Wang Wei (王伟) framed the device as a response to urban “quality upgrades,” arguing cities should move from single-function infrastructure to integrated solutions that serve parks, communities, CBDs and even urban–rural junctions.

Why it matters

Why would a bus stop need AI and exercise machines? For Chinese policymakers and local governments, combining everyday infrastructure with health and smart-city features is part of a broader strategy to promote public wellbeing and showcase homegrown technology. But there are trade-offs to watch: AI in public furniture raises questions about data collection, privacy and who controls the sensors and software. The online version of the story carries a platform notice that the material was uploaded by a Phoenix (凤凰网) self-media user (“Dafeng Hao”), and the report has been presented as user-supplied content — reportedly not editorially produced by the host site — so some details remain to be independently verified.
