Chasing TSMC! Rapidus Accelerates 1nm R&D, Aiming to Narrow the Gap to Just 6 Months

Rapidus ramps up — but is the target realistic?

It has been reported that Rapidus is speeding up research and development on 1‑nanometer logic technology, with an ambition to cut the lead that industry leader TSMC (台积电) holds to as little as six months. The claim — if true — would signal an unusually aggressive leap for a nascent Japanese foundry effort that only in recent years has been rebuilt with heavy government and industrial support to revive domestic advanced-node capacity.

Why the urgency? Short answer: strategic independence. Japan sees advanced semiconductor manufacturing as a national priority after global supply shocks and escalating technology competition. Rapidus’ move is aimed at closing a gap not only in technical capability but in the geopolitical race for chip sovereignty. Reportedly, the push includes bigger R&D investments and faster tape‑outs, though details about timelines, equipment access and partner contributions remain sparse.

Technical and geopolitical hurdles remain

Achieving a credible 1nm process is more than a headline. It requires extreme‑ultraviolet lithography, highly specialized materials, extreme process control and—above all—time to master yields and ecosystem readiness. Even if Rapidus narrows a headline "node" gap, matching TSMC’s production volume, reliability and customer ecosystem is a separate, multi‑year challenge. Can a newcomer compress that learning curve to months instead of years? Skepticism is warranted.

Geopolitics complicates the picture. US export controls, supply‑chain realignments and industrial subsidies are reshaping where advanced fabs can source tools and talent. That constrains everyone: TSMC, Rapidus and firms in China (which face their own restrictions). Rapidus’ acceleration is therefore as much a policy and alliance story as it is a technical one. Reportedly ambitious timelines will need tangible approvals, equipment contracts and steady yields to become more than PR.
