Xiaomi’s Surge OS 3 expands iPhone and AirPods compatibility — an unusually good value this year?
Overview
It has been reported that Xiaomi (小米) this week unveiled its Surge OS 3 (澎湃OS 3) upgrade plan, pushing a broad set of device‑interconnect and usability features to its flagship lines. The update is slated to roll out progressively to the Xiaomi 17 series, Redmi K90 series and Xiaomi Pad 8 series. Apple (苹果) hardware figures prominently in the pitch — Xiaomi is making deliberate moves to work more smoothly with iPhone and AirPods.
What’s new
Key cross‑device features include AirPods compatibility with quick‑connect pop‑ups, battery level display, spatial audio support, noise‑cancelling switching and a Find function. iPhone SMS verification codes synced to a Xiaomi phone will reportedly be smart‑recognized and copyable with one tap, easing multi‑device sign‑ins. Incoming calls can synchronise both ways — an iPhone call can be answered on a Xiaomi device and vice versa. The “贴贴分享” NFC sharing feature now supports voice recordings and notes for fast transfers between Xiaomi phones and iPhones, and Xiaomi has launched a Mac client for cloud notes and albums to enable cross‑platform access.
Usability and accessibility
Surge OS 3 also adds convenience tweaks: hold the power key to keep a continuous conversation with the “Super Xiao Ai” assistant, and tap the status bar in some scenarios to jump to the top of a page. Accessibility gets attention too with a consolidated “elder care” section that bundles font and icon scaling, ringtone volume presets and scam‑call blocking. It has been reported that updates will be staged by model over the coming weeks.
Context
Why does this matter? China’s device market is highly fragmented, and any move that reduces friction between Android devices and Apple hardware is commercially valuable. At the same time, this push comes amid broader US–China tech tensions and shifting global supply‑chain dynamics — not sanctions per se, but a reminder that interoperability can be both a consumer convenience and a strategic product differentiator in a contested landscape.
