Shanghai Jiao Tong's anniversary film sparks backlash for stereotyping women as "baoma"
Controversy over a line — and a takedown
Shanghai Jiao Tong University (上海交通大学) released a 130th‑anniversary microfilm, East Chuan Road 800 (《东川路800号》), that was intended as a nostalgic, "youth‑literary" tribute. But one piece of narration — roughly translated as "the esports god types code and becomes a programmer; the stage's center becomes a baoma (宝妈, doting mother)" — touched off immediate online anger. It has been reported that the university's media centre issued an apology and removed the video after critics said the line reduced the filmed female student to a single motherhood destiny while male characters were mapped to careers and achievement.
Public outcry and institutional blind spots
The uproar focused not on motherhood itself but on the presumption that a high‑achieving woman’s endpoint is invariably domestic. Reportedly the dancer who appears in the clip said she had no idea the finished edit would label her "baoma" and felt her image had been distorted. Social commentary quickly widened: observers noted few female shots in the film and a pattern — campus romance, bridal photos, then motherhood — that reinforced traditional gender scripts. Who reviewed and signed off on the messaging? That question has stung because the project involved alumni directors, multiple campus units and layers of review.
Why this matters beyond one clip
This episode mirrors deeper structural issues in China: persistent gender stereotypes, unequal household labor, limited paternal leave, scarce childcare supply and the well‑documented "motherhood penalty" in the workplace. The debate is not an attack on mothers. Rather, critics argue it is about public narratives that close off other professional and personal possibilities for women. For universities and brands in China — institutions already sensitive to political and social optics — the incident is a reminder that seemingly small creative choices can trigger major reputational and cultural blowback.
