Huxiu reports a sharp contrast in China’s tech tempo: while city programmers queued outside the Shenzhen Tencent (腾讯) building to install a flashy tool nicknamed “OpenClaw” — a craze that even saw installations resold on Xianyu (闲鱼) for hundreds — the same wave quickly soured. It has been reported that within days people began warning “the crayfish is a trojan,” and some users suffered financial and job losses after granting broad permissions. Reportedly, the episode has become a cautionary tale about security and hype in the rush to adopt generative AI.

How AI helped a corner store

Far from the headlines, Huxiu follows an Anhui county retailer, known as “Lao Zhang,” who used free, mainstream AI on his phone to solve everyday business problems. He treated the tool not as magic but as a 24/7 consultant: checking product reputation on Douyin (抖音) and Xiaohongshu (小红书), drafting targeted WeChat Moments copy, analysing inventory and sales, devising bundle promotions, and even composing negotiation scripts when customers haggled. The result was practical — faster stock turnover, sharper messaging, more confident bargaining with reps — and psychological: “I’m not anxious anymore,” he told the reporter.

A structural shift?

Lao Zhang’s experience illustrates a broader, structural possibility. In China’s traditional distribution model — where brands hold the data and dealers are mostly order-takers — accessible AI can furnish a single shopkeeper with capabilities that formerly required a team: low-cost content production, basic data analytics, and customer insight. That empowers grassroots merchants to be market participants instead of passive middlemen. But there are caveats: security risks, platform governance and rising regulatory attention around AI tools. Amid global technology frictions and export controls that shape China’s AI push, small-business adoption will likely be a mix of opportunity and new oversight.
